Textured Crochet Headband Pattern

Looking for a quick crochet project that’s cozy, practical, and beginner-friendly? This textured crochet headband pattern is worked with DK weight alpaca yarn and uses just a few basic crochet stitches to create a surprisingly pretty texture.

The headband is worked in the round, so there’s no seaming when you’re finished. Half double crochet, single crochet, and double crochet are combined with stitches worked in the third loop to create the raised ridges.

It’s a great project for practicing basic crochet skills—and a wonderful way to experience the softness and warmth of alpaca yarn.

Why Alpaca Yarn Is Perfect for a Headband

Alpaca fiber is wonderfully soft and warm without being bulky, making it especially well suited for something worn next to your skin.

For this headband, I used Classic Alpaca, a DK weight 100% alpaca yarn and available in many colors.

DK yarn falls into the Craft Yarn Council’s #3 Light yarn-weight category. If you’re substituting another yarn or aren’t sure how yarn weights compare, the Craft Yarn Council’s Standard Yarn Weight System is a helpful reference.

The DK weight keeps the headband lightweight while the alpaca provides plenty of warmth for chilly days. The simple stitch pattern also allows the natural beauty and softness of the yarn to shine.

Working in the Third Loop

A half double crochet creates an extra horizontal loop behind the two loops that form the “V” at the top of the stitch.

Since this headband is worked in rounds without turning, tilt the top of the work slightly toward you to locate the third loop behind the top V.

For an HDC in the third loop, yarn over, insert your hook under the third loop only, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.  If you’re new to working in the third loop, this video tutorial, Learn It: Half Double Crochet in the Third Loop may be helpful.

For a SC in the third loop, insert your hook under the third loop only, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook.

Working into the third loop pushes the top “V” of the previous HDC round forward, creating the raised, knit-like ridges that give this headband its distinctive texture.

Finishing

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Gently shape the finished headband. Light blocking can help even out the stitches and make the textured ridges stand out.

Make It Your Own

One of the fun things about this crochet headband pattern is seeing how different it looks in different colors. Choose a favorite shade of Classic Alpaca DK weight yarn to make it your own. The combination of simple stitches and raised ridges shows off both natural and dyed colors beautifully.

Beginner Tip: How to Keep From Losing Stitches

One of the most common problems when crocheting in joined rounds is discovering that you suddenly have fewer stitches than you started with.

The beginning and end of the round are usually where a stitch gets lost.

Here’s an easy way to prevent it:

  • The beginning ch 1 or ch 2 does not count as a stitch.
  • Work the first stitch into the same stitch where the beginning chain comes from.
  • Put a stitch marker in that first stitch.
  • Continue crocheting until you reach your marker.
  • Don’t crochet into the beginning chain.
  • Don’t crochet into the marked stitch again.
  • Join with a sl st to the marked stitch.

Every round in this pattern should have 65 stitches.

It’s a good idea to stop and count occasionally. I like to count 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and then 5 more. Catching a missed stitch right away is much easier than finding it several rounds later!

Adjusting the Size

The beginning chain determines the circumference of the headband. If you’d like a smaller or larger headband, you can subtract or add chains. There is no stitch multiple required for this pattern, so you can adjust the starting chain as needed. Before joining your foundation chain, wrap it gently around the head to check the fit.

Keep in mind that alpaca yarn can relax with wear, so you want the headband to fit comfortably snug rather than loose.
