The Peabody Hat and Mitts crochet pattern is a free pattern from Lion Brand Yarn and a great project for beginners. This cozy hat and mitt set uses simple stitches and clever construction, making it fun to crochet while still producing a beautiful, textured finished piece.
We crocheted this set using our Espiral Alpaca Yarn, which adds depth, softness, and a handspun look to this easy crochet pattern.

Why the Peabody Hat and Mitts Pattern Is Beginner Friendly
This beginner-friendly crochet hat and mitts pattern is made from two simple squares that are sewn together in opposite directions. That construction creates eye-catching ridges and texture without complicated techniques—proof that simple projects can still be visually interesting.
It’s a relaxing pattern that’s enjoyable to work on and very forgiving, especially for newer crocheters.

Crocheting with Espiral Alpaca Yarn
The texture of Espiral yarn yarn pairs beautifully with the ridged construction of this pattern, highlighting the stitch definition while still creating a soft, flexible fabric. The natural variation in the hand-dyed yarn adds visual interest, making the meeting of the stitched seams especially fun to see and giving each finished hat and mitt set its own unique character.

A Fun and Cozy Crochet Hat and Mitt Set
The Peabody Hat and Mitts make a warm, wearable set that’s perfect for everyday use or gifting. It’s an ideal beginner crochet project and a great way to showcase alpaca yarn in a simple, approachable pattern.

Yarn and Hook Notes
1. Both Hat and Mitts are each made in two halves.
2. The halves are sewn together following diagrams.

For this sample, we made a few adjustments from the original pattern to suit our yarn and preferred fabric.
Hook used: Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook (This differs from the hook size listed in the original pattern.)
Yarn: Espiral Alpaca Yarn
Yardage: 1 skein of Espiral for hat, two skeins for both hat and mitts
Using an H hook created a fabric we really liked with Espiral—soft, flexible, and nicely textured, while still holding its shape. As always, individual tension can vary, so you may wish to adjust hook size to get the fabric you prefer.

Crochet Stitches Used
st(s) = stitches (es)
ch = chain
hdc = half double crochet
