The Louet Classic Drum Carder is a workhorse. The diameter of the drum is 10" and the width is 7". The carder clamps to a table and comes already permanently adjusted for you. The carder is designed to accommodate fine to medium fiber lengths and the intermeshing teeth allow you to card fibers without pre-teasing.. The teeth on the carder are 3/8" deep and a batt of about an ounce can be produced. It is great to card batts in layers for felt making and color blending can be done with success as well. The carder clamps to a table and comes already permanently adjusted for you.
Louet Carders have enclosed gearboxes that assures smooth carding operation, while the extra high, flexible, teeth allow for a heavier batt than other drum carders as well as a high carding efficiency. Since the Louet drum carderuses a gear drive, there are no belts to slip or wear out.
Easy to use, the these carding machines have stood the test of time.
Choose from theExtra Fine carding cloth at 72 teeth per inch for fine fibers such as alpaca etc., or Fine carding cloth at 46 teeth per inchfor coarse fibers such as Romney.
An instruction manual written by well known author and fiber artist Deb Menz is included with all Louet Drum Carders. Louet Drum Carders are made of laminated birch and have a hard white coating. In order to ensure a long life, the teeth on all Louet carders are made of high grade plated steel wire. All gearboxes are enclosed to prevent fibers entering the gear system. For drum carders it is common to mention the gear ratio that drives the licker-in when you rotate the large drum. However, what really counts for carding is the ratio of the surface speed of both drums, because the difference of surface speed does the carding. You get this surface speed ratio by multiplying the gear ratio with the ratio of the diameters of the large drum and the licker-in.
Drum is 7 1/2" (19 cm) wide and 10" (25 cm) in diameter
Surface speed ratio is 9:1
Teeth are spaced at 72 teeth per square inch or 46 teeth per square inch
