Product Details

This fiber is Suri Alpaca Fiber, carefully skirted, then pre-washed, ready to be carded for spinning into a lovely, silky, lightweight yarn, blended with other fibers, or spun right from the locks for a textured art yarn. Suri spins into a good, strong, drapey yarn and because of it's silkiness and density, is nice at a fingering or laceweight yarn.

This fiber is the prime, or blanket fiber, grown by a very sweet alpaca named "Sam" nine years old at time of shearing. It is a combination of light fawn, medium fawn, and dark fawn, all natural colors, and is approximately 4" in length. Age, genetics, nutrition, and environment all play a part in the fineness of alpaca fiber. This fiber is of medium fineness. Suri fiber dyes like mohair into brilliant colors. White fiber will produce the truest dyed colors, but darker colors can be dyed also.

Suri alpaca is nice blended with silk, seacell, tencel, cormo, merino, kid mohair and rambouillet, and usually 10% is enough. Suri fiber adds interest to needle and wet felting projects, can be woven with, decorated with, even knit or crocheted. Longer length suri fiber is wonderful as doll hair.

Fiber has been pre-washed meaning it has been soaked in soapy water and rinsed multiple times, getting the majority of the dust out. It has been picked through to get out small bits of hay and straw, though you are still apt to find some, which should fall out easily as you work with it.

This fiber is sold in two ounce quantities which fills a sandwich size baggie.

WHAT ARE SURI ALPACAS?
Suri alpacas are distinguished in the camelid family by their unique fiber characters. The fiber grows parallel to the body while hanging in long, separate, distinctive locks. Its artistic style enhances the graceful appearance of the animal compared to the soft, wooly look of huacaya alpacas.

Suri fiber locks, made up of high-luster fibers, drape down the sides of the body in a twisted or flat form of various size. Suri fiber has a slick hand and softness with an exquisite luster.
