Product Details

These Suri Alpaca Locks are the prime fiber grown by an alpaca named "Mae". They average 10" in length. This fiber is from her very first shearing, and is two years worth of growth. It is light fawn, according to The Alpaca Registry Color Chart, with a very pretty sheen to it. It is super soft and silky!

This fiber is sold by the ounce. Pictured are four 1/2 ounce bundles, a total of two ounces.

This fiber has been picked through to remove tiny bits of hay and debris picked up in the pasture, but may still contain very small amounts of vegetable matter that will easily fall out as you work with it. This fiber has been washed, conditioned, and separated from the fleece into individual locks.

Suri is the rarer of the two alpaca breeds. Suri Locks make gorgeous doll hair. They can also be used in tail or core spinning, carded and spun into beautiful silky yarn, or used in a variety of different felting projects. They also are quite fun to use in knitting and crochet projects.

Suris have a fine fiber, with different degrees of fineness based on the age of the alpaca, nutrition, and environment where the alpaca lives. Fineness is measured in microns and is graded according to this chart:

Grade 1 Ultra Fine (less than 20 microns)
Grade 2 Superfine (20-22.99 microns)
Grade 3 Fine (23-25.99 microns)
Grade 4 Medium (26-28.99 microns)
Grade 5 Intermediate (29-31.99 microns)
Grade 6 Robust (32 microns and above)

Though not a certified sorter, I consider this fiber to be Superfine. Be aware that there is some waste when combing out locks for a reroot, especially with the finer fleeces.

These locks can also be left just as is and sewn into a weft to attach directly onto a doll cap.

Locks are the natural divisions in an animal’s fiber. Fiber in lock form has had the locks separated from the rest of the alpaca fleece. A single lock of suri is made up of multiple individual fibers. Separating the locks is not hard to do, but it does take time, and so is priced accordingly.
